Martha L. Barrón

With a background in Psychology, Martha L. Barrón (pen name Chiquis) is an author, researcher, and social justice advocate. She is a native of the Arizona-Sonora border and, for over 25 years, has worked in mental, emotional, behavioral, and physical health research with the University of Arizona Departments of Gender & Women's Studies, Psychiatry, and Medicine. Her interests have been in observing cultural influences that impact racial, ethnic, and gender health disparities. Her work in academia is closely tied to and inspires the themes in her creative projects and publications, fueling her desire to use literature and art as powerful and transformative spaces where creativity meets activism. Through her written works, she aims to amplify marginalized voices, challenge prevailing narratives, and inspire others to reflect on their own beliefs and actions so they may connect with social justice issues on a deeper, more personal level.
